State Highway 1 Repair, New Zealand

Project Overview

New Zealand, located on the seismically active Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes. In November 2016, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the South Island, causing widespread damage. The most significant impact was around Kaikoura, where State Highway 1—the country’s most critical North-South route—and the Coastal Pacific rail line sustained severe structural damage. The disaster completely cut off the town, which heavily relies on tourism for economic survival.

The repair of these essential transport links became a project of national importance, marking the most extensive reconstruction effort on New Zealand’s road network in 75 years. Given the area’s coastal exposure and rugged terrain, the project required durable, corrosion-resistant materials that would ensure the long-term stability of the infrastructure while minimizing future maintenance costs.

This is why Mateenbar60™ fiberglass rebar was chosen as the primary reinforcement for the project.

Project Results

A key objective of the project was eliminating steel reinforcement to maximize durability and reduce long-term costs.

Key project highlights included:

  • The new seawall foundations, located beneath the high tide mark, were designed for future retrofitting in response to rising sea levels, ensuring long-term adaptability.
  • With a 100-year design life, the seawall provides sustainable protection for both the road and rail infrastructure along this vital coastal route.
  • Traditional steel rebar was eliminated and replaced entirely with Mateenbar60™, a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar, enhancing durability and preventing corrosion.
  • Pre-cast concrete blocks reinforced with Mateenbar60™ expedited construction, allowing for a faster and more efficient seawall assembly.
  • The blocks were securely anchored using GFRP bolts, further strengthening the structure while maintaining a corrosion-free foundation.

The incorporation of Mateenbar60™ fiberglass rebar reinforcement guarantees that the upgraded infrastructure will withstand the harsh coastal conditions for generations to come.

This solution not only supports the long-term viability of Kaikoura’s transport links but also ensures the town remains safely accessible for both residents and tourists, safeguarding its economic future.
